What IRCC says about deposits
IRCC explicitly states that a qualifying Super Visa medical policy may be paid in full or in instalments with a deposit. An estimate or quote is not accepted. There is no universal deposit dollar amount published by IRCC for all insurers.
The required deposit is determined by the actual provider’s billing agreement. Do not promise a particular number of months or a flat deposit before viewing the issued offer.
When a deposit is collected
In an eligible instalment purchase, the payment provider may require the initial deposit when the contract is set up and then schedule subsequent collections. Confirm whether the certificate is issued immediately, whether a payment mandate is required, and what is owed if travel dates change.
Documents worth keeping
- Policy certificate with the parent’s name and insurer/underwriter.
- Coverage of at least CAD $100,000 in emergency medical expenses.
- Policy dates showing at least 12 months of validity from planned entry.
- Benefits including health care, hospitalization and repatriation.
- Deposit transaction receipt and scheduled instalment arrangement.
- Issuer’s cancellation, non-payment and claims terms.
Beware of misleading advertisements
A marketing page that says “pay only one month” may suggest an invalid short-term policy if the one-year insurance contract is not truly in effect. Seek the issued contract and review all policy terms rather than relying on promotional copy.
